Why Choosing a Niche Matters
Many beginners believe they need the perfect idea before they start. The truth is that choosing a niche isn’t about finding the “perfect” topic—it’s about finding a market where people already have problems they want solved.
The right niche makes everything easier:
✔ Creating content
✔ Building an audience
✔ Ranking in Google
✔ Recommending products
✔ Generating income
Spend a little more time choosing your niche now, and you’ll save yourself months of frustration later.
What Exactly Is a Niche?
A niche is a specific topic or audience within a larger market. Rather than trying to help everyone, you focus on a smaller group of people with a shared interest, problem or goal.
Examples include:
✔ Home Coffee
✔ Personal Finance
✔ Gardening
✔ Dog Training
✔ Camping
✔ Home Fitness
✔ Cooking
The more focused your niche, the easier it is to create useful content and attract the right audience.
Why Choosing the Right Niche Matters
Every decision you make later depends on your niche.
It influences:
- your website
- your content
- your products
- your audience
- your income
Choosing well now saves months of frustration later.
How to Choose a Profitable Niche
Choosing a niche is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when starting an online business. It influences the content you create, the audience you attract, the products or services you recommend, and ultimately how your business grows over time.
The good news is that you don’t need to find the perfect niche.
You simply need to choose a niche that has enough demand, interests you enough to keep learning, and gives you the opportunity to help other people.
Many successful online businesses didn’t begin with the perfect idea. They started with a good idea that improved as the owner gained experience.
Your goal today isn’t to make the perfect decision.
Your goal is to make a confident decision.
Find Your Sweet Spot
The best online business niches sit where three important things overlap.
Your ideal niche isn’t simply something you enjoy. It should also solve problems people care about and have opportunities to generate income. When all three come together, you’ve found a niche with real long-term potential.
Step 1: Start With What You Already Know
The easiest place to begin is with yourself.
Think about your hobbies, interests, work experience and everyday life.
Ask yourself questions like:
- What do I enjoy learning about?
- What problems have I solved?
- What do friends or family ask me for help with?
- What could I happily talk about for an hour?
Don’t judge your ideas yet.
Simply write them down.
Aim for at least 10 niche ideas before trying to narrow your list.
Sometimes your best idea isn’t your first one.
Step 2: Find Problems People Want Solved
Successful businesses solve problems.
Instead of asking:
“What do I want to write about?”
Try asking:
“What are people already looking for help with?”
For example:
Instead of choosing Fitness, you could focus on:
- Home workouts for beginners
- Fitness over 50
- Walking for weight loss
- Resistance band exercises
Instead of Gardening, you could focus on:
- Growing vegetables in small gardens
- Indoor plants
- Raised garden beds
- Gardening for beginners
The more specific your niche becomes, the easier it is to stand out.
Step 3: Make Sure People Are Searching For It
A brilliant idea isn’t much use if nobody is looking for it.
Before choosing your niche, spend some time researching.
Useful places include:
- Google Search
- Google Trends
- Google Keyword Planner
- YouTube Search
- ChatGPT
You’re looking for signs that people are actively asking questions.
If lots of people are searching for information, that’s usually a good sign that the niche has demand.
Once you’ve found a niche that fits the three-circle method, the next question is whether other people are already succeeding in it.
Step 4: Don’t Be Afraid of Competition
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to find a niche with no competition.
In reality, competition is often a positive sign.
It usually means there’s already an audience and money being spent.
Instead of avoiding competition, look for your own angle.
You don’t need to be different from everyone.
You simply need to be helpful to the right people.
Step 5: Check That Your Niche Can Make Money
A profitable niche usually has products, services or software people already buy.
Ask yourself:
- Are there books on this topic?
- Are businesses advertising?
- Are there products people recommend?
- Could I recommend useful tools?
- Could I create my own downloadable resources in the future?
If the answer is “yes” to several of these questions, your niche has good potential.
Remember, the goal isn’t to sell everything.
The goal is to become a trusted source of information.
Step 6: The 100 Article Test
Here’s one of my favourite ways to judge a niche.
Ask yourself:
Could I create 100 genuinely helpful articles about this topic?
If your mind immediately goes blank, the niche may be too narrow.
If ideas keep flowing, you’ve probably found a niche with long-term potential.
For example, “Coffee” might lead to topics like:
-
✅ Choosing coffee beans
✅ Home espresso machines
✅ Milk frothing
✅ Coffee grinders
✅ Brewing methods
✅ Café reviews
✅ Coffee storage
✅ Beginner coffee guides
That’s already several months of helpful content.
Step 7: Choose a Niche You Can Grow With
Don’t chase a niche simply because someone says it’s profitable.
Choose something that you enjoy learning about.
Building an online business takes time.
You’ll create content, answer questions, learn new skills and continually improve.
If you genuinely enjoy the topic, staying motivated becomes much easier.
Remember:
You don’t need to know everything today.
You simply need to know more tomorrow than you know today.
That’s how expertise is built.
Before You Make Your Final Decision
Before moving on to Phase 2, ask yourself these questions:
✅ Does this niche genuinely interest me?
✅ Are people searching for information about it?
✅ Can I help people solve problems?
✅ Are there products or services available?
✅ Could I create helpful content for years to come?
If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, you’ve probably found a niche worth building.
You’re Ready for Phase 2
Choosing your niche can feel like a huge decision, but don’t let it stop you from getting started.
Many successful online businesses evolve over time. Your first niche doesn’t have to be your forever niche.
The important thing is to choose a direction, take action and keep learning.
Progress comes from building, testing and improving—not from waiting for the perfect idea.
Once you’ve chosen your niche, you’re ready for the next exciting step:
Registering your domain name and establishing your online identity.

❌ Ignoring Search Demand
A great idea isn’t enough. Make sure people are actually searching for information in your niche.
